1

What is Frequency?

  • Scienctist use the word Frequency when they are counting the number of wavelengths in a sound wave in a certain amount of time.

  • We can think about whether or not a sound has a high frequency (a High amount of wavelengths) by asking ourselves the question “How frequent are the wavelengths?”

2

Sound Waves

Sound waves are Longitudinal (Compression) Waves that MUST have a MEDIUM in order to function.

Medium: Solid, Liquid, Gas

Sound can not be heard in space or anywhere else that does not contain matter

3

Frequency Continued....

Frequency and wavelength are related to each other. Something with a low frequency means that fewer waves are occurring, and that the wavelengths are Less frequent. Frequency is measured in a unit of measurement called a Hertz (Hz). One hertz is equal to one Vibration per second.

What is Pitch?

Many people use the term Pitch when they are describing a sound’s Frequency. The higher the frequency (short wavelengths occurring frequently), the higher the pitch. When a sound has a low frequency (longer wavelengths occurring farther apart), the sound has a lower pitch. A sound’s frequency can be measured, but pitch is usually a matter of opinion.

What Can you hear?

The human ear can hear a range of frequencies, but over time, all humans Loss some of their abilities to hear the higher and lower frequencies. Listen to the recordings and record the range of frequencies that your ears can detect.
