1. Traits

Definition: the physical characteristics of an organism
Example of Human Traits: Eye Color, Skin Tone, Hair Color, Height

2. Heredity

Definition: the passing of traits from parents to offspring

3. Genes

Definition: segments of DNA found on chromosomes that control traits

4. Allele

Definition: the different forms or versions of a gene

1. Dominant: an allele that ALWAYS shows up in an organism when it is present.
2. Recessive: all allele that is COVERED UP by the dominant allele.

5. Genotype

Definition: an organism's genetic make-up, allele combination

6. Homozygous

Definition: an organism that have two IDENTICAL alleles for a trait
also known as a purebred

7. Purebred

Definition: produces offspring with SAME TRAIT as the parent, has 2 IDENTICAL alleles for a trait

8. Heterozygous

Definition: an organism that has 2 DIFFERENT alleles for a trait
also known as a hybrid

9. Hybrids

Definition: carries 2 different alleles one DOMINANT and one RECESSIVE

10. Phenotype

Definition: the PHYSICAL APPEARANCE of a gene; inherited traits
