What is Energy?

Think of the last time you saw a fireworks display. Fireworks explode and create bursts of color in the night sky. Fireworks release energy when they explode.

Energy is the ability to cause change. The energy in the fireworks causes the changes that you see as flashes of light and that you hear as loud booms.

What does the ENERGY in the FIREWORKS cause to happen?

1

Light and Sound

2

Nothing

3

Scientists aren't sure

Fill in the Blank

Energy is the ability to cause ____________.

5

Energy can cause changes in the motion or positions of objects.

Ex: When a hammer hits a nail, energy from the hammer moves the nail into the piece of wood.

OBJECTS

Plants use energy from the sun and make their own food.

The explosion of fireworks, the growth of a flower, and the motion of a hammer all involve_____________.

7

~Kiran Bisht~

" Every person has the potential to achieve what they aspire. An opportunity or adversity act as force to bring into action, then accomplishments. Be someone's Kinetic energy to convert their Potential energy into action."

8

Kinetic Energy

Energy of Motion

Have you ever been to a bowling alley? When you rolled the ball and it hit the pins, a change occurred - the pins fell over.

This change occurred because the ball had a form of energy called kinetic energy.

Kinetic Energy is energy due to motion.

9

Kinetic Energy

All moving objects have kinetic energy. The kinetic energy of a moving object depends on two factors:

1) The objects SPEED
2) The objects MASS

10

Multiple Choice

Question image

The Kinetic Energy of a moving CAR depends on what TWO MAJOR FACTORS?

1

Sound and Color

2

Color and Shape

3

Speed and Mass

4

Size and Shape

11

If two objects are moving at the same speed, the object with more mass has more kinetic energy.

Car #1 - 15 M/S Mass=1,500kg
Car#2 - 15 M/S Mass=1,400kg

Kinetic Energy and Mass

The faster an object moves, the more kinetic energy it has.

Car #1 - 15 M/S

(Meters per second)

Car #2 - 50 M/S

Potential energy is stored energy due to the interaction between objects and particles.

1

4

Scientists aren't sure yet.

16

Potential Energy has three different forms!

1) Gravitational potential energy,
2) Elastic potential energy, and
3) Chemical potential energy

1) Gravitational potential energy, for example, is energy stored between a book and the Earth. The gravitational energy stored between any object and Earth depends on the object's mass and its height above ground.

media

17

*Height Ex:* If there were two vases on a book shelf, the vase on top of the bookcase would have more gravitational potential energy than the vase that fell from the bottom shelf. An object that falls from a greater height can cause a greater change.

Height Example

*Mass Ex:* Dropping a bowling ball from a height of 1 m causes greater change than dropping a tennis ball from the same height. When two objects are at the same height, the one with more mass has more gravitational potential energy.

Mass Example

Gravitational Potential Energy depends on an objects mass and its height above the ground

18

Multiple Choice

Elastic potential energy is energy that is stored when an object is compressed or stretched. Which of the following DOES NOT FIT?

1

Jumping on a pogo stick - compresses the spring

2

Stretching a rubber band

3

Jumping on a trampoline

4

Laying on the floor

19

Multiple Choice

When you eat, you take in another form of potential energy. Chemical reactions within your body release this energy stored in food. What is it called?

Work is the transfer of energy to an object by a force that makes the object move in the direction of the force.
Work is only being done while the force is applied to an object.

Work depends on:
