The Tribute Money
Artist - Masaccio, 1427
Shortly before Masaccio painted a mural called The Holy Trinity, an architect named Filippo Brunelleschi made a discovery known as linear perspective. Based on geometric principles, this system enabled an artist to paint figures and objects so that they seem to move deeper into a work rather than across it.
13
The Tribute Money - 1427
Group of three scenes that tell a story from the life of St. Peter.
Each scene is part of a continuous narrative shown on the same panel. Masaccio models his figures in the scene so that they seem to be as solid as statues. In this image, Masaccio uses aerial or atmospheric perspective to show the endlessness of space as well as the illusion of depth in this 2D painting.
