Standard
SEV1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate
information to investigate the flow of energy
and cycling of matter within an ecosystem.
C. Analyze and interpret data to construct
an argument of the necessity of
biogeochemical cycles (hydrologic,
nitrogen, phosphorus, oxygen, and carbon)
to support a sustainable ecosystem.
7
Poll
Did you do the whodunnit activity
yes
almost done I will turn it in today
I forgot I will turn it in today
yes, I did it but still have questions
8
Learning Targets
I can explain the pathways
nitrogen takes through the
environment.
I can understand and label a
diagram of the nitrogen cycle.
9
Hawk eye’s
question
Write in this box!!!
We will discuss the nitrogen cycle
Where is most of the nitrogen in the ecosystem?
Beginning-of-
class
10
When starting an
aquarium, you can’t add
fish right away...they’ll
die.
Why?
Keep this question in
mind and we will revist it
at the end of class.
Do you have an
aquarium?
Take me to see
How many of you have ever
set-up or owned a fish tank?
11
Nitrogen Cycle
Nitrogen Fixation
Nitrification
These are the terms you will learn today.
How many are you already familiar with? 1, 2, or 3?
Hold up your fingers in front of the camera to show me.
12
Poll
nitrogen cycle, fixation
I heard this from another science class
I heard of it but do not know the details
I never heard of it
I heard the words but not in connection with the ecosystem
13
Nitrogen
Living things need Nitrogen.
The majority of Earth’s
atmosphere (78%) is Nitrogen.
Like the water cycle, Nitrogen
also cycles through the
biosphere (click for a
refresher of the biosphere).
14
Nitrogen
Chlorophyll
Nitrogen is vital for life on Earth.
It's required for:
DNA
15
Nitrogen
And it is required for:
amino acids.
16
Check for Understanding
Nitrogen is essential for all of the following except:
🐢 cloud formation
🐇 building muscle
😀 chlorophyll in photosynthesis
🔊 DNA formation
17
Multiple Choice
Nitrogen is essential for all of the following except:
nitrogen fixation
protein synthesis
cloud formation
chlorophyl synthesis
18

🔊 DNA formation
19
Nitrogen Fixation
Producers like plants can’t use the
form of Nitrogen found in the
atmosphere.
Nitrogen must combine with other
elements first.
This is done by bacteria (microbes) in
the soil. It’s called “fixing” nitrogen.
The new compound is ammonia.
20
Nitrification
Ammonia still can’t be used.
More bacteria in the soil attach to
the ammonia to form new
compounds.
This is called Nitrification.
The Nitrogen can now be
absorbed by plants through their
roots.
Animals (and humans) eat the
plants and absorb the Nitrogen.
Animal/human waste and matter
is decomposed and the process
starts again.

24
Group discussion Task
●Which group are you in Canvas?
25
Groups have announcements
●Step 2 look at the announcement it has 3-4 questions about your step in
the nitrogen cycle.
●In the main chat share an answer to one of the questions
26
Hotspot
Where do you find the group activity for the nitrogen cycle?

Here are some materials to review or Web search
●I will look through the material
●I will look on the web

Nitrogen fixation is carried out by nitrogen-fixing bacteria that
live in the soil and roots of legumes, such as peas, making these
bacteria an essential part of the _____ cycle.
🐢 carbon
🐇 nitrogen
😀 water
🔊 phosphorus
