The “Process Manager”

The “Process Manager”
The CPU is able to process instructions at a phenomenal rate –
billions per second.
It may be working on several different tasks (running the clock,
tracking the mouse, displaying text on the screen, monitoring the
network, printing a document…).

The CPU is able to process instructions at a phenomenal rate – billions per second.
It may be working on several different tasks (running the clock, tracking the mouse,
displaying text on the screen, monitoring the network, printing a document…).
The OS manages the switching between tasks.
For example, whilst Word is waiting for a character to be
displayed on the screen, the OS may allocate a different process
for the CPU to execute, and then switch back to Word once the
character is displayed.
This is the responsibility of the OS, acting as the process Manager
17
The “Device Manager”
18
There are hundreds of different computers,
printers, keyboards, screens, mice, …
All these different devices need different
instructions to work.

When programmers write applications like Word or PowerPoint, they
don’t want to have to include the instructions for every possible
device – what would happen if a new printer was released…

A file manager or file browser is a computer program that allows
you to manage your files and folders.
The most common operations include creating, opening, renaming,
moving, copying, deleting and searching for files.
Files should also be protected to ensure they cannot be accessed
by unauthorised users.

The network manager manages the connections between the
operating system and the network(s) that it is connected to.
You do not then need to worry about things like connectivity or
network speed.

Memory is like your work desk. All the things you’re
currently working on are placed here.
When a task is finished, that space is freed up and available for you to put a new task there.

The “Memory Manager”
In a computer, the CPU may be working on several different
tasks (running the clock, tracking the mouse, displaying text on
the screen, monitoring the network…). The instructions and data
for each of these will be stored in the CPU’s work desk – RAM
memory. As one task is completed, the memory is freed up and
allocated to another, waiting task.
