Energy and Life
2
Learning Objectives
▪ Describe why ATP is useful to cells.
▪ Describe what happens during the process of
photosynthesis.
3
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is one of the most important
compounds that cells use to store and release energy.
3 phosphate groups
ribose
adenine
4
Labelling
Label the three parts of ATP

5
Adenosine Diphosphate (ADP)
Adenosine diphosphate (ADP) has two phosphate groups
instead of three.
adenine
ribose
2 phosphate groups
6
Fill in the Blank
ATP has 3 phosphates.
How many phosphates does ADP have?
7
Storing Energy
When a cell has energy available, it can store small
amounts of it by adding phosphate groups to ADP
molecules, producing ATP.
8
Multiple Choice
Which of these is a way that cells can STORE energy?
(Read carefully!)
Making ATP
by adding a phosphate to ADP
Making ADP
by removing a phosphate from ATP
Making ADP
by adding a phosphate to ATP
Making ATP
by removing a phosphate from ADP
9
Releasing Energy
When a cell needs energy, it can release it by breaking
the bond between the second and third phosphate
groups in ATP.
10
Multiple Choice
Which of these is a way that cells can RELEASE energy?
(Read carefully!)
Making ATP
by adding a phosphate to ADP
Making ADP
by removing a phosphate from ATP

13
ATP Production
Cells must produce ATP. In photosynthesis, plants convert
the energy of sunlight into chemical energy stored in the
bonds of sugar. Sugar is a better way to store larger amounts of energy in a cell for a longer amount of time. The energy from sugar is used to add phosphates to ADP to "recharge the battery".
14
Multiple Choice
What is produced using the process of photosynthesis?
ATP
ADP
sugar
water
15
Multiple Choice
How is the energy from sugar used in cells?
to make ATP
to make ADP
to transport ions through the cell membrane
to move around
16
Heterotrophs and Autotrophs
Organisms that make their own food are autotrophs.
Plants and phytoplankton are autotrophs.
Organisms that obtain food by consuming other living things
are heterotrophs.
Animals, Fungi and zooplankton are heterotrophs.
