are unique ecosystems?
🐢 They receive chemicals from
commercial & industrial runoff.
🐇 They filter water due to all the
bottom feeding fish.
😀 They have a high saltwater
content.

Gardens
Does anyone have a garden
where they can get fresh food
all summer?
Give me a ✅.
If you don’t, have you gone to
a farmers market?
Give me a 👍.
10
Fresh vegetables in
the winter
You don’t have to give up fresh
vegetables in the winter!
How can vegetables grow when
there is snow outside?
Why do you think the top is open
even though it is cold outside?
11
A greenhouse traps the sun's heat
and keeps plants warmer than
they would be without the
greenhouse. Greenhouse gases
do the same thing for the earth.

What do you
see around
our earth?
What is it
made of?
23
Our Atmosphere
Our atmosphere is a layer
of gases around the earth
that allows us to live on
the surface of the earth.
It is about 300 miles thick
but most of it is within 10
miles of the surface.
24
What is it?
The greenhouse effect is a
natural process that
warms the Earth's
surface. When the Sun's
energy reaches the
Earth's atmosphere, some
of it is reflected back to
space and the rest is
absorbed and re-radiated
by greenhouse gases.
25
What are greenhouse gases?
Greenhouse gases are gases in Earth’s
atmosphere that trap heat. They let sunlight
pass through the atmosphere, but they
prevent the heat that the sunlight brings from
leaving the atmosphere. The main
greenhouse gases are:
●Water vapor
●Carbon dioxide
●Methane
●Ozone
●Nitrous oxide
●Chlorofluorocarbons
Which of these have you heard of?
Did you know all of these were greenhouse
gasses?
26
27
Are greenhouse gasses always bad?
When people are talking about greenhouse gas
emissions, it is easy to think that there weren’t any
before the industrial revolution. Greenhouse gases at
normal concentrations are completely natural and
harmless. In fact, our planet needs them and life on this
Earth would be completely different if there was no
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. In fact, scientists
are estimating that the average temperature on Earth
would be around -18 degrees Celsius. Greenhouse
gases are a natural part of the atmosphere, which
absorbs and emits thermal radiation, keeping
temperatures on Earth more or less the same.
28
Greenhouse gases have increased
since the industrial revolution. It has
impacted the temperature of the
earth.
What do you notice about these two
graphs.
29

Lesson Summary
➢The atmosphere has 5 layers. We live in the
troposphere and the stratosphere contains the
ozone layer where greenhouse gases are.
➢We need greenhouse gases in order for the
earth to be warm enough for us to live on.
➢Too many greenhouse gases are like an extra
blanket on the earth and it makes it too hot.
➢A very, very small percentage of the
atmosphere is made of greenhouse gases.

Keeping Track on
Human Impact
Human Impact Fossil Fuels
We use fossil fuels for a lot of
different things. We use them to
power our cars, airplanes, and
lawn mowers. We also use them
to produce electricity.
When we burn fossil fuels all of
the stored carbon is released into
the air. This causes the
atmosphere to warm up.
