#1
Explain how natural resources can be used sustainably
to ensure continued availability for future generations
Understand the different ways people view natural
resources
4
Success Criteria
#2
#1
Using one natural resource as example, explain one way
how the natural resource can be used sustainably.
Describe one nature-centred or human-centred way
of thinking about the usage of a natural resource.

How can we use
natural resources
sustainably?
Why is there a need to
use natural resources
sustainably?
WHY
HOW
6
RECAP!
What is a natural resource?
7
Word Cloud
What is a natural resource? How are they classified?
8
Natural Resource: Fish
What do you see?
What do you think about?
What does it make you
wonder about?
9
THINK-PAIR-SHARE:
SHOULD WE
CONTINUE TO FISH?
10
Poll
Should we continue to fish?
Yes
No
11
SHOULD WE CONTINUE TO FISH?
YES
We need to continue fishing to feed the people and to satisfy
hunger concerns.
More fishing can help increase economic gains and allow more
sales of fish to earn profits.
No
There will be a negative impact on communities because there
will be not enough fish stocks in future.
There will be a negative impact on environment because
declining fish population will cause entire fishery ecosystem to
collapse.
Human-centred view
(Extractive, Exploitative)
Nature-centred view
(Preservation, Conserve)
Reflection question: At what rate? At what cost?
12
Nature-centred VS Human-Centred
Physical environment with its natural resources is seen as valuable in itself and should
be preserved, protected and retained.
Physical environment is valuable to humans for us to obtain materials from it for
people’s benefit and use, so we have to extract materials to promote personal
well-being or sell them for money.

13
Multiple Choice
"We can go Chek Jawa over the weekends, go down to the mudflats and catch some creatures to play with!"

14
Multiple Choice
"No, don't touch any creatures in Chek Jawa, you will damage our environment!"

15
How to sustainably manage natural resources:
No-Fishing zones
Extension question:
●Will no fishing zones be always effective?
●What are the challenges?
16
Multiple Choice
One of the rangers spotted something suspicious, what was it?
Pirates invading the no-fishing zone
Illegal fishing in the fishing-ban zone
Lots of dying marine animals
Dying coral reefs underwater

04
You have been assigned a natural resource. Investigate why is there a need to conserve the
natural resource and how can the resource be used sustainably.
18
FORESTS
01
Providing timber, oxygen, habitat, and biodiversity.
19
Should we continue to cut down
forests?

Extension question:
●Is this strategy always effective?
●What are the challenges?
For a good response, you
should include:
★What is the
management
strategy?
★Who implemented
it?
★1 reason why it is
effective
★How does it ensure
sustainable use of
resource
21

Open Ended
After hearing from your classmates, why do you think there is a need for sustainable use of natural resources?
31
Poll
Which do you think is the most important natural resource that should be preserved?
Forests
Water
Crude Oil
Metals
32
Poll
Which do you think is the preferred way of thinking towards the usage of natural resources?
Nature-centred
Human-centred
33
Consolidation of learning
Different countries hold differing views about
the usage of natural resources.
To sustainably manage our precious natural resources, we can reduce rate of
extraction, adopt 4R approach, & tap into technological development.
PLACE MATTERS
SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT
SUSTAINABLE USAGE OF
RESOURCES
Sustainable usage of resources recognise the nature-centred view and the importance of preservation.
