1: What problems are facing J.T.? Answer:
He thought the job duties were going to be fun, but he regrets it. He doesn't find it fun to clean toilets or tend to children.
The lifeguard training was harder than he expected and if he quits, he will have to pay the training fee.
He has limited flexibility in his work schedule, and that means he cannot spend time with his family nor do what he wants.
2: What are some possible solutions? Answer:
J.T. can ask his manager if he can change his work schedule.
He can ask a coworker to switch shifts with him.
To make the job more enjoyable/interesting he can find activities to do with the kids and coworkers.
J.T. should consider staying in the job and start thinking about what he wants to do next summer.
3: Did he make the right decisions while looking for a summer job? Answer:
J.T. followed after his friend interest instead of his. He should have chosen a job that he is interested in. His friend Alex had good intentions, but it did not align with J. T's interests.
4: What could he have done differently? Answer:
Research: J.T. could have researched the job responsibilities as well as the pros and cons of being a lifeguard.
He could have researched online.
He could have talked to the manager or another employee.
Ask questions: During the interview or application process, he could have asked more detailed questions about what he would be doing as a lifeguard.
Shadow or had a trial period: He could have shadowed a lifeguard to see what the job is really about before committing to go through training.
Consider multiple options: He should not have settled for what his friend said. He should have researched for jobs based off of his interest.
