Starting at the center, the structure of the Earth is composed of
the inner core, the outer core, the mantle and the crust.
Each layer has a unique composition and physical state.
The inner core, which is almost the size of the moon, is the hottest,
densest part of the Earth. It is as hot as the surface of the Sun.
It is made of metal, mostly, iron and nickel.
The outer core that surrounds the inner core is similar, mostly iron,
with a little nickel and some other chemical elements. The difference between
them is that the outer core is liquid and the inner core is solid or plasma.
3
The mantle, which lies between the outer core and the crust, makes up about
70 percent of the planet's mass, this is Earth’s thickest layer.
It is dense, hot and semi-solid (think caramel candy).
Earth’s crust is like the shell of a hard-boiled egg. It is extremely thin and cold
compared to the other three layers. The crust is broken into big pieces,
like a gigantic jigsaw puzzle. These are known as tectonic plates.
