Dots on the Map: The World's Smallest Countries

2

Do you ever look at a map and marvel not at the size of Russia, Canada or China, but at the tiny dots that you're not sure are even countries?

Well, many of them are. These are the countries the size of small towns, that you could walk across in a day, or fly over almost without noticing.

So what are the smallest countries in the world by area? And why should you visit them?

You may already know that the Vatican City — home of the pope and found in the Italian city of Rome — is the world's smallest nation state.

Less than half a square kilometer in size, you could run across it in just a few minutes, if it wasn't for the crowds of tourists visiting the city's churches and museums!
A little larger is Monaco in the south of France. The most densely populated country in Europe, it is popular among the rich and famous.

3

Monaco is not hard to get to, unlike the tiny Pacific islands of Nauru and Tuvalu.

They are not visited by many people, although Australia has been sending refugees to a center in Nauru in recent years.

Tuvalu is under threat from rising sea levels and the islands may disappear as the sea rises further.

Back in Europe, San Marino and Liechtenstein are also among the world's smallest countries.

San Marino, which is surrounded by Italy, has been called the oldest country in the world. Visitors can learn about most of its history in just one day, by walking the old streets.

In Liechtenstein, the beautiful Vaduz Castle is the star, along with the green mountain paths.

There is more to many of these dots than meets the eye!
