Backyard Acrobat

I made the birds a tasty treat
With bagel, seeds and string
And peanut butter thickly spread
To make the birdseeds cling.

5 But before the backyard birds could sup

Upon this wintry feast
From far below came darting up
A different kind of beast.

He nimbly balanced on a branch

The Umbrella

Rain roars on the metal barn roof

outside the barn doorway where I stand
with my brother and sister

“I’ll get an umbrella,” shouts my father.
He pushes a pitchfork deep
into a haystack, twists the handle, and hoists it
up, up, and up, high above his head.
