• Definition: Text that explains or describes people, animals, or objects.

• Purpose: To provide detailed information about a particular object by explaining its features and characteristics.

• Social Function:

  To provide information about a thing by describing its physical attributes and behavior.

Descriptive Text:

Descriptive text is used to explain or describe people, animals, or objects. It provides detailed information about a particular object by describing its physical attributes and behavior. Descriptive text is not used to entertain the reader with fictional stories. It is an essential tool for conveying information in a clear and concise manner.

Descriptive text structure

• Identification

Identification is the initial part of the descriptive text which contains an introduction to the name of the object, the meaning of the name, location, history of birth, or other general description of the object being described.

2. Description

Description which contains a detailed description of an object, including the object's physical condition, appearance, personality, habits, and unique facts related to the object being discussed

Linguistic elements of descriptive text

Linguistic elements contained in text descriptions include:

• Using the simple present tense (the use of to be: is/are).

• Using adjectives (adjectives), for example, smart cat (kucing yang pintar)

Describing People

a. Physical Appearance (penampilan fisik)

describe a person’s general appearance

Example: he has green eyes (dia laki laki mempunyai mata berwarna hijau)

b. Personality (sifat/karakter)

describe a person’s characters using adjective

Example: She is friendly (Dia perempuan adalah seseorang yang ramah)
