In inglese di solito non si usa il sistema orario di 24 ore, esso viene solo usato negli orari ufficiali.
Nella lingua parlata l’ora viene espressa usando i numeri da 1 a 12.
Per indicare le ore tra mezzanotte e mezzogiorno, si usa l’espressione a.m. (ante meridiem); da mezzogiorno a mezzanotte si usa p.m (post meridiem). Si possono anche usare le espressioni "in the morning", "in the afternoon", "in the evening", "at the night" per evitare ambiguità.
Per gli orari dei mezzi pubblici si usa l'orario di 24 ore.
L'ora in inglese si chiede:
What's the time? oppure What time is it?
Si risponde: It's...

La prima cosa da fare per imparare a leggere l'orario è dividere il quadrante a metà. Nella parte destra troviamo l'uso di PAST (passate, dopo), mentre nella parte sinistra usiamo il TO (a, per arrivare a...).
Per leggere un orario in inglese bisogna tener conto che i minuti precedono le ore e si userà PAST per indicare i minuti prima della mezz’ora e TO per quelli fino all’ora successiva.

Per le ore intere si usa l’espressione
o’ clock. Quando le lancette segneranno ad esempio le 16.00 in punto si dirà:
It's four o'clock
Analizziamo la parte destra del quadrante.
Nella parte che inizia dal numero 12 e arriva al numero 6 (quindi da 0 a 30 minuti), si dovrà leggere l’orario in una particolare maniera, che può essere spiegata con un esempio:
16:05 It’s five past four
Letteralmente significa: sono cinque minuti dopo le quattro.

I quarti d’ora si indicano con quarter past (un quarto d'ora dopo) la mezz’ora con half past (mezz'ora dopo).
