Making inferences
An inference is when you take clues from the text and what you already know to draw a conclusion.
-Schema is your background knowledge- what you ALREADY know.
Text clues + What you know (schema) = Inference!

Making inferences
Inferences require you to read between the lines to figure out what the author is trying to tell you.
Inferences are NOT directly stated in the text. You must think deeper to understand what is going on.

You will need to use your inference skills to also understand the meaning of words.
Example:
“When she walked into the gallery, she saw a grotesque statue of an animal
head with a human body. The beast had long fingernails and scary features.”
What does 'grotesque' mean?
Think about the sentences. What's the best way to describe this beast if it's got a human body and animals head, long fingernails and scary features?
Funny, horrible, large or pretty?
