1

What is Energy?

Energy is the ability of an object to transform itself or produce changes in other objects.
LAWS OF ENERGY:
1. Energy cannot be created or destroyed
2. Energy can pass from one object to another object
3. Energy can change from one form to another form of energy

2

energy that has the potential to become another form of energy
EX. ball stopped, students sitting still, sitting at the top of a rollercoaster

Potential Energy (PE)

the form of energy that it possesses due to its motion
EX. ball moving, students running, going down a roller coaster

Kinetic Energy (KE)

Main types of Energy

media

3

Energy Basics

Similar to how a heavier object will need more force to move, if an object is larger it will have more energy than a smaller object.
Therefore, the larger the object = the more energy it has
For example, a moving airplane will have more kinetic energy than a person on a bicycle even if they were going the same speed

Radiant Energy

Definition: energy transmitted in the forms of waves through space or a medium
EX. Sun, microwave, charcoal grill, natural gas

Chemical Energy

Examples:

Chemical energy- is energy stored in the bonds of
atoms and molecules. Chemical energy is converted to
thermal energy when people burn wood in a fireplace or
burn gasoline in a car's engine.

Sound Energy

Sound energy- is the movement of energy in waves. It is
generated by vibrations and needs a medium, such as air,
water, or a solid to travel through. It is produced when
sound waves move outwards from a vibrating object or
sound source.

12

Light energy

Travels in waves by a straight line through space through space, the only form of energy we can see
Ex. Sunlight, fire, flashlight, stars

Thermal Energy

Thermal Energy: is the energy due to the motion of
particles that make up an object. Thermal energy
moves from hot or warm objects and heats up the
contacting surface.

Examples:

14

Mechanical Energy is the combination of Potential Energy and Kinetic Energy

Mechanical energy = Kinetic energy + Potential energy

15

Renewable natural sources of energy that nature replaces rapidly
They will be replenished, renewed or will come back

Renewable Energy

19

Nonrenewable sources of energy are limited in numbers because it takes a long time to replenish them or make new.
These sources do cause pollution.

Nonrenewable Energy
