The rainwater cycle

There is no new water on Earth – all water is about 4.2 billion years old, whether it is sea water (saline), river or stream water, groundwater, fossilised water or

water from the polar ice caps

Of the rain that falls on the UK annually, only 5 per cent is collected and stored in reservoirs for the drinking water supply.

The rest flows in rivers to the sea or is filtered down to the natural water table or aquifers that exist below the ground surface.

COLD WATER SYSTEMS FED FROM PRIVATE WATER SUPPLIES

The UK has more than 500,000 people whose only source of potable drinking water is from a private supply.

The main methods of private supplies are from a

wells or a boreholes:

14

Boreholes and wells are both sources of water from underground but differ in their depth and width.

A borehole is a very narrow shaft that is drilled deep into the ground, in this instance to extract water.
In contrast, a well is wider and shallower, particularly if it is dug by hand. Wells may be many feet in diameter whereas a borehole will only be inches across.
