LESSON #14:
EQ: How do the various
forms of energy shape our daily lives and world around us?

media

3

  • Potential Energy (PE)

  • Kinetic Energy (KE)

Two Main Types of Energy

The ability to MOVE or CHANGE matter in some way.

The ability to do WORK (physics)

SI units - J (Joules)

Science Definition

What is Energy?

4

media

5

Thermal Energy

Thermal energy is the total kinetic (motion) energy of the tiny particles that make up matter. The faster the particles move, the warmer the matter becomes.

media

6

Electrical Energy

  • The energy of electric charges

  • Can be kinetic

  • can be potential

media

7

Chemical Energy

  • Energy stored in chemical bonds

  • When the bonds are broken the energy is released

media

8

Electromagnetic Energy

  • Form of energy that travels through space in waves

  • The light we see from the sun

  • Cell Phones

  • Microwaves

  • Radio Waves

media

9

Nuclear Energy

  • Stored in atoms

  • Released during a nuclear reaction

  • Fission- Splitting of atoms

  • Fusion- Atoms join together

  • Nuclear fusion reactions occur continuously in the sun, releasing tremendous amounts of energy

STORED energy

or

Energy that is ready to be released.

Potential Energy

11

media

Energy that is released

or

Energy in motion

Kinetic Energy

12

Light Energy

Travels in waves, is visible to us (we can see it).

media

13

Sound Energy

travels in waves, is produced by vibrations
