What is Energy?

Thermal Energy

Thermal energy is the total kinetic (motion) energy of the tiny particles that make up matter. The faster the particles move, the warmer the matter becomes.

Electrical Energy

• The energy of electric charges

• Can be kinetic

• can be potential

Chemical Energy

• Energy stored in chemical bonds

• When the bonds are broken the energy is released

Electromagnetic Energy

• Form of energy that travels through space in waves

• The light we see from the sun

• Cell Phones

• Microwaves

• Radio Waves

Nuclear Energy

• Stored in atoms

• Released during a nuclear reaction

• Fission- Splitting of atoms

• Fusion- Atoms join together

• Nuclear fusion reactions occur continuously in the sun, releasing tremendous amounts of energy
