Greece is a peninsula, or a body of water that has land on three sides.

Peloponnesus

The Greek peninsula is divided in two. The Peloponnesus is the southern (bottom) peninsula. An isthmus, a narrow strip of land, joins the Peloponnesus to the rest of Greece.

Mountains

Greece is covered (75 to 80 %) in mountains. This made travel and communication difficult. The Greeks did not create a single large empire, but instead, they lived in many city states.

The mountains and rocky soil were not good for growing grain. Greeks used the mountains for growing grapes and olives. Herders raised goats and sheep on the rocky soil. There was also lots of fish!
