Simple Machines

A machine that makes work easier by changing the amount of force you exert or the distance over which you exert the force.

Mechanical Advantage

The force applied by the machine is greater than the force you put in.

Compound Machine

A machine made of more than one simple machine.

Fulcrum

The fixed point around which a lever pivots.

Lever

A rigid bar pivoted about a fulcrum.

Inclined Plane

A flat surface set at an angle used to help raise or lower objects.

Wheel and Axel

A large wheel with a rod, called an axel, through its center.

Screw

An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder

Wedge

A device that tapers to a thin edge and is used for splitting, raising heavy bodies, or is used for tightening by being driven into something.

Pulley

A wheel with a groove in which a rope can run to change the direction or point of application of a force applied to the rope.
