CLASS 2

2

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Differentiate between defibrillation and cardioversion, including indications for use and physiologic effects.

  • Identify how to use an automated external defibrillator

  • Manage the care of a client with a pacing device

  • Intervene to improve client cardiovascular status (e.g., initiate protocol to manage cardiac arrhythmias, monitor pacemaker functions, ECMO, IABP, VAD)

3

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Utilize the clinical judgment steps when making decisions about patient care (1. recognize cues, 2. analyze cues, 3. prioritize hypotheses, 4. generate solutions, 5. take actions, 6. evaluate outcomes)

  • Manage the following rhythms: bradycardia (including heart blocks), PVCs, ventricular tachycardia (monomorphic and polymorphic), ventricular fibrillation, atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, sinus tachycardia, asystole, atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) aka supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), pulseless electrical activity (PEA)

  • Perform diagnostic testing (e.g., electrocardiogram, oxygen saturation, glucose monitoring)

  • Evaluate and document the client’s response to emergency interventions (e.g., restoration of breathing, pulse)

4

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Manage the care of a client with impaired ventilation/oxygenation

  • Assess and respond to changes and/or trends in client vital signs

  • Apply knowledge of client pathophysiology when measuring vital signs

  • Apply knowledge needed to perform related nursing procedures and psychomotor skills when assessing vital signs

  • Apply knowledge of pathophysiology to interventions in response to client abnormal hemodynamics

5

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Apply knowledge of client pathophysiology to illness management (hypertensive crisis, aneurysm, dissection, pulmonary embolism,,valvular and inflammatory heart disorders, ACS, end stage heart failure, and cardiac tamponade)

  • Assess client for decreased cardiac output (e.g., diminished peripheral pulses, hypotension)

  • Apply knowledge of pharmacology (antidysrhythmic, inotropes, coagulation modifiers, antihypertensives, antianginals, antihyperlipidemic, preload/afterload reducers, diuretics, electrolytes, anti-infective, heparin)

6

media
  • Review Hinkle Chapter highlights 21 (cardiac stress test, echo, electrophysiologic testing), 22 (rhythm management), 23 (ACS/MI), 24 (valvular disorders, inflammatory heart disease, cardiac tamponade), 25 (PE, end stage heart failure, cardiac tamponade, cardiac arrest) 26 (pulmonary embolism, aneurysm, dissection), 27 (hypertensive emergency)

  • Review Lippincott Skills for Nursing Education16-1, 16-2, 16-3, 16-4, 16-5, 16-6
