Cell Theory is made of 3 major concepts. Please write these down!
1. All living things are made of cells.
2. Cells are the smallest unit of life.
3. All cells come from pre-existing cells.

6
Multiple Choice

7
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is true of cell theory?
It was developed over time by one scientist.
It was developed by a single scientist over a short period of time.
It was developed by many scientists working together happily.
It was developed by many different scientists over a long period of time.
8
Please write the following in your notes:
1665 – Robert Hooke: First to observe cells through a rudimentary microscope. He observed cork cells, and coined the term “cells."
*Hooke May have looked like this, but we aren't sure!
9
Keep going!
1674 – Anton von Leewenhoek Observed the first living cells in teeth scrapings pond water. He called them “wee beasties" and animalcules.
10
Multiple Choice
Which scientist was the first to use the term "cells?"
Robert Hooke
Anton Von Leewenhoek
Mattias Schleiden
Theodor Schwann
11
12
Next Up - Write this down!
1838 – Mattias Schleiden Botanist (studied plants) who concluded that all plants and plant parts are made of cells.
13
And his partner...
1839 – Theodor Schwann Zoologist (studied animals) who conclude that all animals are made of cells.
14
The final piece of cell theory...
1855 – Rudolph Virchow After looking at many different types of cells, he concluded that all cells come from pre-existing cells.
15
But Wait! There's More!
** If you run out of room, please use the back of your paper!
1970 – Lynn Margulis Developed Endosymbiotic Theory. This is the idea that complex eukaryotes evolved when larger prokaryotes engulfed smaller prokaryotes. The two then formed a mutually beneficial relationship that led to a new organism.
16
