Climate and weather are different concepts, though they are related. How are the concepts of weather and climate different?
Weather refers to conditions nearer to the ground than climate.
Climate is related to the amount of sunlight; weather is not.
Weather conditions include precipitation, but climate does not.
Climate covers larger areas and longer times than weather.
5
Multiple Choice
These weather maps show conditions in Texas on two days. Which city on the map had rain on Friday and no rain on Sunday?
Houston
El Paso

Multiple Choice
The kinds of data that reflect climate are different from the conditions described in weather data. Which of the following is a description of climate?
Today it is hot and sunny in Phoenix, Arizona
Summers are usually mild in Lansing, Michigan
Last week it rained every day in San Antonio, Texas
Yesterday was cold and windy in Anchorage, Alaska

Multiple Choice
Weather data is different than climate data. Which of the following is an example of weather data?
The average high temperature in May is 21°C in the Midwest of the United States.
Central Australia usually receives less than 110mm of rainfall all year.
The relative humidity was 24% at noon on July 23 in Tempe, Arizonia
On average, there is 88mm of rain in the Gulf Coast Region in July.

Weather
L1
13
Weather
Weather is the short-term conditions of the
atmosphere in an area that can change by the
minute, hour, day, or week.
Weather and climate
Weather conditions include:
•Temperature
•Precipitation
•Cloud cover
•Wind speed & direction
14
Weather
Themperature is a measurement of how hot or
cold the air is.
•Air temperature varies by the time of day and
month of the year.
•A thermometer is used to measure air
temperature.

—Let’s Think about it
Maybe you’ve heard the old saying, “You can tell
the temperature by counting a cricket’s chirps.”
Well, it’s true.
Crickets are great thermometers! They chirp
faster when warm and slower when cold. Also,
they are extremely accurate. Count their chirps
for fourteen seconds. Then, add forty. You have
the temperature (in degree Fahrenheit) of
wherever the cricket is!
Now, try the “cricket thermometer” for yourself!
16
Think About It!
Remember to count their chirps for fourteen
seconds. Then, add forty. You have the
temperature (in degree Fahrenheit) of wherever
the cricket is!
What is the temperature if the cricket chirped
50 times in 28 seconds?
17
Open Ended
What is the temperature if the cricket chirps 50 times in 28 seconds?
18
Precipitation is water that fall to the
surface of the Earth.
●Rain
●Sleet
●Snow
●Hail
The form in which precipitation hits the
surface depends on the air
temperature.
A rain gauge measures the amount of
rain that falls to the Earth’s surface.
Weather and climate
19
Cloud cover describes the amount of
clouds in the sky.
●Clouds form when water vapor
condenses into tiny water droplets
or ice crystals.
●Terms such as mostly cloudy,
partly cloudy, or mostly sunny are
used to describe the amount of
cloud cover.
Weather and climate
Which day(s) are going to be mostly cloudy?
(You will type your answer in the next slide.)
20
Multiple Select
Which day(s) are going to be mostly cloudy?
Saturday
Sunday
Monday
Tuesday
Wednesday
21
Wind speed describes how fast the air
is moving from one place to another.
●Air is constantly moving from
areas of high pressure to areas of
low pressure.
●Wind speed and direction are
measured using an anemometer.
●A windsock or wind vane can also
be used to determine wind
direction.

23
What causes weather?
•Energy from the Sun drives the
water cycle, which creates
weather.
•The Sun’s energy causes water
from oceans and other large
bodies of water to evaporate.
•Rising air cools and condenses
to form clouds and precipitation.
•The Sun heats the surface of the
Earth unevenly, creating wind.
Weather and climate
24
Why do weather conditions change?
Weather conditions change as different air
masses move across the Earth.
High pressure systems generally bring fair
weather consisting of cool, dry air with lots of sun.
Low pressure systems generally bring stormy
weather with warm, moist air.
Weather and climate
25
Open Ended
In which area of the United States would you expect to be stormy?
26
Multiple Choice
The weather map shows the high temperatures for two day in January. Which day had weather temperatures that seem unusual for winter?

27
Multiple Select
Which of the following are TRUE? (Select ALL that apply)
Weather can change from minute to minute
Weather can change from day to day
Weather can change from hour to hour
Weather can change from season to season
