Thomas Jefferson chose Meriwether Lewis, his 28-year-old private secretary, to head the expedition into Lousiana Territory.

Toussaint L’Ouverture was born into slavery in Haiti. His plantation overseer allowed him to learn to read and write, and he served as a coachman and house servant on the plantation. When he was in his thirties, Toussaint gained his freedom. Soon after, in 1791, a revolt against French rule broke out. The insurrection was put down, but by then the ideals of the French Revolution had spread throughout Haiti. Toussaint became commander-in-chief of the colony of Haiti.

Pirates are people who commit piracy, or acts of theft, on the seas. In the late 1700s and early 1800s pirates were active in the Barbary States of North Africa. In many places in the world pirates are still active on the seas.

Barbary pirates demanded that governments pay tribute, or protection money, to allow their country's ships to pass safely. If tribute was not paid, the pirates attacked and took ships, and imprisoned their crews.

The war ended with the signing of a peace treaty in June 1805. Tripoli agreed to stop demanding tribute, but the United States had to pay $60,000 for the release of the prisoners
