4 Basic Layers

-Crust

-Mantle

-Outer Core

-Inner Core

The farther you go to the center of the earth, the greater the temperature becomes.

3

  • It is earth's outer, most coolest, and least dense layer.

  • There is two types of crust: Continental Crust and Oceanic Crust

  • Oceanic crust: lies beneath the ocean, and is 5 to 10 kilometers (3 to 6 miles) thick.

  • Continental crust: contains mostly land, and is 15 to 70 kilometers (9 to 45 miles) thick, the thickest being under a mountain.

  • There are areas known as Mid-ocean Ridges where oceanic crust is constantly being created.

Earth's outermost compositional layer?

Crust

2

Mantle

3

Core

6

Asthenosphere

  • Upper part of the mantle that is made of semisolid rock.

  • Flows slowly.

  • Convection currents occur her causing tectonic plates to move.

The mantle is about 2,900 kilometers (1800 miles) thick, and the lithosphere and asthenosphere is in the mantle.

Inner Core

11

The Core

The Outer Core: The liquid layer of the Earth’s core that lies beneath the mantle and surrounds the inner core.

The Inner Core: The solid, dense center of our planet that extends from the bottom of the outer core to the center of the Earth. (3,964 miles beneath the surface)

Outer Core

13

  • Solid, dense center of Earth made of iron and nickel.

  • Although the inner core is very hot, it is kept solid due to the great pressure of the layers above it.

  • About 6,380 km below Earth's surface.
