In China, Christmas hasn't always been a publicly celebrated religious holiday. However, as China
becomes more global, it has started to welcome a commercialized version of Christmas, known
as Sheng Dan Jieh or the "Holy Birth Festival," with both religious and secular Chinese Christmas
traditions.

When is Christmas celebrated
Like the rest of the world, Christmas Day in China is on December 25th each year. However,
Christmas traditions in the country are relatively young and it is mainly celebrated as a commercial
season instead of a religious day. Here are more interesting facts about how the Chinese celebrate
Christmas!

What type of foods are popular for their Christmas meal?
Like American traditions, those who celebrate Christmas in China have a feast. But rather than
turkey and stuffing, the menu would look similar to a Spring Festival fair with roast pork, jiaozi
(Chinese dumplings), spring rolls, huoshao (baked roll with or without stuffing), and rice.

Children in China eagerly hang muslin stockings for Santa Claus (who they call Dun Che Lao Ren,
which means "Christmas Old Man") to fill at Christmas. Gift baskets filled with food and other items
are always a welcome host or hostess treat when visiting during the holidays.

People give apples on Christmas Eve because in Chinese Christmas Eve is called "Ping'an Ye"
meaning peaceful or quiet evening, which has been translated from the carol 'Silent Night'. The
word for apple in Mandarin is "píngguǒ" which sounds like the word for peace.

temporary moratorium on the repayment of foreign debts, English, Spanish, and French troops invaded the
country. By April 1862 the English and Spanish had withdrawn, but the French, with the support of wealthy
landowners, remained in an attempt to establish a monarchy under Maximilian of Austria and to curb U.S.
power in North America. On May 5, 1862, a poorly equipped mestizo and Zapotec force under the command of
General Ignacio Zaragoza defeated French troops at the Battle of Puebla, southeast of Mexico City; about
1,000 French troops were killed. Although the fighting continued and the French were not driven out for
another five years, the victory at Puebla became a symbol of Mexican resistance to foreign domination. The
city, which was later renamed Puebla de Zaragoza, is the site of a museum devoted to the battle, and the battl

Christmas is taken very seriously in Iceland. The whole house is cleaned, everyone gets something new to wear, people buy the
best food, decorate the house inside and out and bake hundreds of cookies. It is truly a feast of the senses.
Long before Christianity was introduced, people in Northern Europe celebrated winter solstice which ushers in gradually
lengthening days. In Iceland, winter solstice celebrations were grand events. Landowners would invite many people to their
house, and people would feast and drink extravagantly. After the adoption of Christianity in the year 1000 in Iceland, this
celebration was integrated with the Christian Christmas Celebration. Thus, Icelandic Christmas are historically two celebrations:
Celebrating the birth of Christ and celebrating the beginning of the lengthening daylight hours.

Costa Rica is a primarily Catholic nation and Costa Rican citizens observe Christmas with exuberance. Christmas in Costa
Rica is a vibrant time: a celebration of the season, of lights and music, and of course, of family togetherness.
