THE STORY OF J’AI

A long, long time ago French people did not say J’AI.
They said :

JEAI

But then, they decided that if a word ends with “e”, and the next word
begins with a vowel (a,e,i,o,u) then, the “e” should go. And it became:

J’AI

Remember that JE means I

WHERE WE USE “J’AI”

J’ai is used for talking about age :

J’ai huit ans.

It is used for talking about who our family members are:

J’ai un père
J’ai une mère
J’ai une soeur
J’ai un frère

WHERE WE USE “JE SUIS”

JE has returned again here.
JE SUIS means I AM

We use JE SUIS for talking about our gender, for example.

JE SUIS UNE FILLE
JE SUIS UN GARCON

In our new unit, we will also look at other sentences where we use
JE SUIS

J’HABITE

Once upon a time, this word was different. It used to be:

JE HABITE

But because H is a vowel in French, they decided that the H would eat the A, so it
became:

J’HABITE

Think of English : when you speak, you don’t always say

I HAVE A DOG

You shorten it by saying I’VE GOT A DOG.

J’AIME

Once upon a time, this word was different. It used to be:

JEAIME

But because A is a vowel in French, they decided that the H would eat the A, so it
became:

J’AIME

J’AIME means I LIKE

JE N’AIME PAS means I don’t like

The same thing happened with JE N’AIME PAS:

JE NE AIME PAS became JE N’AIME PAS

HOW AND WHEN DO WE USE J’AIME?

To talk about a color we like.

Then, we always have to use LE:

Can you guess why we are
using l’ instead of le for this
one?

HOW AND WHEN DO WE USE J’AIME?

To talk about a color we don’t like.

Then, we always have to use LE (or L’, as we saw in the previous slide)

Again, we use l’ because of
the vowel at the beginning
of the word
