If we see a negative
exponent, we will move it
to the other side of the
fraction AND make the
exponent positive

30
To solve I subtract the
exponents:
False
I don't subtract the
exponents because the
bases are not the
same.

I can move my “y” base to the bottom:
True
False
y -12
x 7
32
I can move my “y” base to the bottom:
True
Why???
I can move the y to
the denominator
because...
y -12
x 7
33
I can subtract the exponents:
True
I can move my y base
to the denominator
because the
exponent is negative.
y -12
x 7

What do we notice happens when we work with negative exponents (powers)?
35
What do we notice happens when we work with negative
exponents (powers)?
●If negative exponent in the numerator (top half of a fraction) that base moves to the bottom AND changes from negative to positive.
●If negative exponent in the denominator (bottom half of the fraction) that base moves to the top AND change from negative to positive.
●If there isn't a fraction written, we use the expression given as the numerator and write the denominator as 1.
