Polar v. Grizzly
Do you think bears are frightening? If so, you’re not
alone. Many people are frightened of bears. But did you
know that not all bears are alike? There are actually 8
different species, or scientific groups, of bears. Think
about a polar bear and a grizzly bear. They are both
bears, but they are different in many ways.

One way a polar bear and grizzly bear are different is size.
Both bears are big, but polar bears are the biggest of all
bears. I was amazed to learn that polar bears can weigh
1,700 pounds, and grow to 10 feet! That is an amazing fact!
Grizzlies are big, too, but not as big as polar bears. Fur
color is another way the two bears differ. Polar bears have
white fur, while grizzlies can have different color fur. Some
have white fur like the polar bear, but others have brown,
black, or even red fur. Another difference is their habitat, or
where the bears live. Both live in nature, but polar bears live only in the Arctic. Grizzly bears, on the other hand, live in many different parts of the world . Finally, grizzly bears
sleep, or hibernate, in the winter, when it’s cold and there’s
not enough food. Polar bears, however, don’t hibernate.
