Reference words: Identifying reference words can help you understand a text much better
It is used in writing and is one of the questions in your Midterm and Final Exam of reading section.
A single word
I spoke to Sarah and she is coming to the wedding tonight.
Hassan and I design the magazine. It comes out twice a year.
The magazine is popular with the students, and they look forward to getting a free copy.
Common reference words include:
Subject pronouns: (I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they)
Object pronouns: (me, you, him, her, it, us, you, them)
Possessives pronouns: (mine, yours, his, hers, its, ours, yours, theirs, )

Reference words are:
Reference words can refer to words or ideas which have been mentioned earlier.
For example:
Walking is good for your health. It improves blood flow.
My doctor said I should go walking every day. He was right and my health has gotten better.

Subject/ Personal pronouns
The subject pronouns are I, you, she, he, it, we, they
The subject pronoun it (referring to things) and they (referring to either people or
things) are used the most in academic writing. He and she is used to talk about
people mentioned earlier in the text.
For example: Healthy people should exercise no matter how old they are.

The possessive pronouns show a relationship of ownership or belonging to.
These include: my, mine, your, yours, his, her, hers, its, our, ours, their, theirs.
When possessive pronoun is used to refer, we must use possessive noun to answer.
Possessive noun – add (‘s) or (‘) to the noun.
For example: Abdullah is going to buy a new iPhone. His old phone was Samsung.

Answer: Abdullah’s
The Qatari football team plan to win the Asian Cup. Their goal is to win the
championship this year.
2. What does word their refer to?
Answer: The Qatari football team members’
