His Proper Name is Holy Spirit

When Christians join the terms Holy and Spirit together, they are clearly following Jesus’ revelation about the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity. The Holy Spirit is of the same “substance” (nature) as the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit is the breath (Spirit) of the Father with whom Jesus is totally filled. The Spirit is active in the Word. He is the gift given by the Father and Son to all of Jesus’ followers to do in us what he did in Jesus.

The Symbol of Water

Water can represent both death and life. Too much water causes floods that lead to destruction and death, yet we need water to live. Images of both death and life appear in the Bible in connection with water. For example, God punished humanity in the time of Noah by sending the Flood. But God also created the world out of the watery chaos and sent springs of water to the Chosen People in the desert.

The Symbol of Water

Jesus associated water and the Spirit when He said to Nicodemus, “Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit” (Jn 3:5). This refers to the Sacrament of Baptism, which brings about our death to our old life of sin and our rebirth to eternal life. The waters of Baptism initiate us into Christ’s body, the Church, and bestow on us the gift of the Holy Spirit.

The Symbol of a Dove

In the Gospel stories of Jesus’ baptism, the Holy Spirit descends on Him in the form of a dove. This image of a descending dove brings to mind God’s Spirit hovering over the waters at creation.
