I can explain the American Revolution

I can explain the impact of the "Age of Revolutions" on African and Latine Americans

4

the American Revolution

  • The British wanted to make the colonies repay them for defending them in war against Native Americans and the French

  • So, they created different policies to tax colonists and prevent further conflict

    • Taxes on goods and services

    • Proclamation of 1763 (Stops colonists from moving further west/stealing Native lands)

      • THe British government was also considering abolishing slavery

All of this was threatening the major wealth that "elite" colonists had built

"Freedom from oppression"

5

the American Revolution

  • Wealthy, educated, white, male colonists were upset with the policies of the British government

    • These are the "founding fathers"

      • Educated, wealthy, usually slave and/or business-owning, white men

  • The French were already enemies of the British
-This is why they help the colonists

British vs American colonies and France

6

the American Revolution

  • The "Founding Fathers" wrote about things like "liberty", "equality", and "Independence"
-->They were mostly interested in building these things for themselves

    • EXAMPLE: Keep enslaved labor (biggest profit), ability to gain more land, and power to write/create laws for society

      • These are ALL things that connect to their wealth$$

    • *This is important, because it impacts who gets citizenship and the rights that come along with it.

      • The "founding fathers" are controlling the "dials" of the American machine
