Writing Complete Sentences

A complete sentence must have a subject and a predicate, and must express a complete thought. A complete sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with final punctuation.

Writing Complete Sentences

When writing sentences, avoid fragments, run-on sentences, and comma splices.


A comma splice occurs when two complete sentences are joined by a comma.

Sentence Error Examples

  • Fragment: Played baseball (missing subject)

  • Run-On Sentence: Zoe walked to the park Zak ran there.

  • Comma splice: He threw the ball, she caught the ball.

How to End a Sentence

  • Periods: used when a sentence does not ask a question or express strong feelings.

  • Semicolons: used in place of a period to join two related sentences together.

  • Question Marks: used when a sentence asks a question.

  • Exclamation Points: used when a sentence expresses strong feelings.

Rules of Capitalization

  • Capitalize the first letters of names.

  • Capitalize the first letter in a sentence regardless of whether it's a name or not.
