The Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement

Rule #1: Use a singular pronoun to refer to a singular antecedent. Use a plural pronoun to refer to a plural antecedent

Rule #2: Use a plural pronoun to refer to two or more singular antecedents joined by "and"

Rule #3: Use a singular pronoun to refer to two or more singular antecedents joined by "or" or "nor"

Rule # 4: - If the antecedent is female use she, her, or hers. If the antecedent is male use he, his, or him. If the antecedent is a group of people use they, their, or them.

  • Pronouns take place of nouns.

  • An antecedent is a noun to which a pronoun is referring to.

  • Ante- means before; therefore, the word antecedent simply means that which comes before.

  • A pronoun must agree with its antecedent.
