• Slavery in the United States first began in Virginia during
the Colonial era.
• Cash crop plantations
• As more territory was added to the Union, free states
and slave states fought to gain control of Congress.
• Efforts to resolve the conflict were made in:
• The Missouri Compromise (1820)
• The Compromise of 1850
• Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854)
