The Latin Deli:
An Ars Poetica

2

Background Context

Who is Judith Ortiz Cofer?

Ortiz Cofer and her family moved to the US from Puerto Rico in 1956. In the decades that followed, many Latin American families did as well. The population of Latinos living in the US increased from 6 million people in 1960 to over 50 million people today.
Ortiz Cofer's family moved to Paterson, NJ and later Augusta, GA, both home to diverse communities of Latin American immigrants for whom stores like the one described in "The Latin Deli" are important links to the culture of the places they left behind.
