● Think about the following excerpt from page 39:
“When time passed and the animals had evidently not
starved to death, Frederick and Pilkington changed their

flourished on Animal Farm. It was given out that the
animals there practiced cannibalism, tortured one another
with red-hot horseshoes, and had their females in
common”
● THINK ABOUT THE EVENTS OF CHAPTER 4, then answer
the question: Why are the neighboring farmers
spreading false rumors about Animal Farm?

Why are the neighboring farmers spreading false rumors about Animal
Farm? Respond now in your ELA journal.
Mr. Jones spent his time in a bar complaining to other farmers about what had happened to him.
The other farmers tried to figure out how they could take advantage of the situation. Mr. Jones's two
neighboring farms were Foxwood and Pinchfield. The larger, Foxwood was owned by Mr. Pilkington
who enjoyed fishing and hunting so much that he neglected his farm. The smaller, Pinchfield, was
owned by Mr. Frederick. Mr. Frederick kept his farm in better condition. He liked to negotiate
business deals and was frequently involved in lawsuits. Mr. Frederick and Mr. Pilkington did not like
each other at all, but they were both frightened of the animal revolution that had taken place on
Manor Farm. Frederick and Pilkington spread rumors the animals were fighting amongst
themselves and starving to death. When it became evident that was not happening, they spread
rumors of torture and cannibalism on the farm. No one really believed those stories.

Task: Track Snowball,
for chapter 4 in
Graphic organizer
What did these
characters’ actions
before, during, and
after the “Battle of the
Cowshed” reveal about
them and their
perspectives?
14
Snowball anticipated the battle and planned
for it. It shows that he was worried about
human intervention all along, and the success
of his planning shows how clever he is.
We learned that Boxer has a kind heart and is
sad to have killed someone, but Snowball seems
cold hearted. He says, “The only good human
being is a dead one.” They have differing
perspectives on value of life.
Boxer and Snowball both prove their bravery
and determination. Snowball gives a speech
saying that all animals must be prepared to
die for the farm. This is a new side to him.
Mollie continues to seem superficial and
even cowardly. She was hiding under the hay
during the battle.

What words describe how Snowball feels now?

Animal Farm is told from a third person
omniscient perspective- meaning the reader is
able to read the thoughts of more than
one character. This allows the reader to be
able to make their own judgments about
characters.
