SEV4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to
analyze human impact on natural resources.
c. Construct an argument to evaluate how human population
growth affects food demand and food supply (GMOs,
monocultures, desertification, Green Revolution).
1. I can describe the characteristics or trends of
human population growth (past, present & future).
2. I can predict how human population growth
affects food demand and food supply.
3. I can define the terms GMO and Green
Revolution and can explain their environmental
impacts.
8
Cocoa plantations
Much of today’s cocoa is grown in monocropping systems.
This agricultural practice involves cultivating a single crop in
an area – disrupting food systems for wildlife, people, and
organisms in the soil.

10
Organisms in the soil(nitrogen cycle)
•The conversion of nitrogen can be carried out through both
biological and physical processes. Important processes in the
nitrogen cycle include fixation, ammonification, nitrification,
and denitrification. The majority of Earth's atmosphere (78%)
is atmospheric nitrogen
11
Chemical –icides(pesticides)
12
Biodiversity lessened
•Tropical rainforest climate is favorable for the cocoa plant
Cocoa farmers usually clear tropical forests to plant new cocoa trees rather than reusing the same land.
That practice has spurred massive deforestation in West Africa, particularly in Ivory Coast.
13
Food sources become scarce
•Acacias are thorny scrubby African trees. Acacia leaves are an
important food source for many of Africa's largest herbivores such
as giraffes, zebras and elephants.
