Distance - The sum of all steps, meters, centimeters, miles or kilometers travelled
Distance is a scalar.
Displacement - the difference in position from the starting point to the end point.
Displacement is a vector and needs direction.
The magnitude of displacement is always smaller or equal to the magnitude of the distance
2
3
In this example, the starting point is A and the ending point is C.
The distance is the sum of 4m + 3m, which makes 7 meters.
The displacement, however, is the difference in position between points A and C, which is 5 meters NE
How did we find "5m" ? The "inclined" line, which is the hypotenuse in a right triangle, is found by using the Pitagorean Theorem (a2 + b2 = c2) . In this example, it would look like this: 42 + 32 = c2 > 16 + 9=c2 > 25= c2 > c = √ 25
c = 5 m
√
4
Displacement can be zero (0) when the final position of the object is the same as its initial position

6
Multiple Choice
What is your displacement if you move B > C > B
zero
2m
4 m
2 m backwards
7
Multiple Choice
What is your distance and displacement if you move A > H > F? assume each square is 1 m
distance = 7 m
displacement = 7 m
distance = 7 m
displacement = 5 m NE
distance = 7 m
displacement = 10 m N
distance = 7 m
displacement = 25 m
8
Speed and velocity show the relationship between a distance travelled in a certain period of time. Therefore, speed and velocity need to show a number with two types of information: the distance AND the time. This is why we say meters per second (m/s), miles per hour (mph), etc.
East, down, to the left, upwards are examples of ways to tell the direction.

Multiple Choice
A plane takes 12 hours to fly 86,000 km. What is the plane`s speed?
860 m/s
920 m/s
7,167 km/hr
10,320 km/hr
11
When you rearrange the formula for speed (or velocity), you can also find distance (or displacement) and time.
12
Multiple Choice
What is the speed of a jet plane that travels 528 meters in 4 seconds?
132 m
2112 m/s
132 m/s
121 m/s
13
Multiple Choice
How long will your trip take (in hours) if you travel 350 km at an average speed of 80 km/hr?
4 hours 37 minutes
4 hours 38 minutes
4 hours 22 minutes
14
Multiple Choice
How far (in meters) will you travel in 3 minutes running at a rate of 6 m/s?
18 km
2 m
18 m
0.5 m
15
Relative speed is the speed of a moving object in respect to another. If the two objects are moving in the same direction, their relative speed is their difference. When they are moving in opposite directions, their relative speed is the sum of both.
16
Multiple Choice
What is the speed of the red car relative to the green car?
10 m/s
-10 m/s
60 m/s
30 m/s

Multiple Choice
A ball rolls down a ramp for 15 seconds. If the starting speed of the ball was 0.8 m/sec and the
final speed was 7 m/sec, what was the acceleration of the ball ?
0.41 m/s/s
0.52 m/s/s
117 meters
93 m/s

Multiple Choice
As clothes in the dryer tumble and rub back and forth, electrons are scrubbed from one
object to another. Why do they clothes stick together?
The friction between the clothes binds them together.
The electrons form a bond that is shared between the clothes.
There is an overall positive charge on one item of clothes that loses electrons and it is
attracted to the piece that has an overall negative charge from gaining electrons.
The weak nuclear force holds these items together.
