SEV3a. orgins of nonrenewable energy ).
1. I can describe the difference between nuclear
energy and fossil fuesl.
2. I can describe the limited ore Uranium.
3. I can define the impact of nuclear energy.

Vocabulary
Solar energy – the Sun’s energy is
collected and converted to useable
energy, an inexhaustible resource
Geothermal energy – heat is harnessed
(captured) from deep beneath the
Earth’s surface and converted to a
useable energy, an inexhaustible
resource
Hydropower – the movement of water
moving through a dam is converted to
a useable energy, a renewable
resource
Wind energy – turbines harness
(capture) the movement of air and
convert it to useable energy, an
inexhaustible resource
Nuclear

deposits

to
obtain energy, a non-renewable fossil
fuel

Labelling
nuclear energy is the term
fission
the energy splitting an atom
nuclear energy
high temperature in reactors
8
Four points about nuclear energy
•Fission reaction
•Uranium
Nonrenewable but
alternative resource
•
radioactive
waste
9
1. Nuclear fission
In nuclear fission, atoms are split apart, which releases energy. All
nuclear power plants use nuclear fission,
10
2. Nonrenewable but alternate
resource
Because nuclear power uses up radioactive fuel, it is not renewable in
the same way. Nuclear energy, however, is the second-largest source
of low-carbon electricity in the world behind hydropower.
11
3 Uranium
Uranium is one of the rare Earth metals.
Found through mining-it is a limited resource on the planet
12
4 radioactive waste
Radioactive (or nuclear) waste is a byproduct from nuclear reactors,
fuel processing plants, hospitals and research facilities.
Did you know:
Transuranic wastes,
sometimes called TRU,
account for most of the
radioactive hazard
remaining in high-level
waste after 1,000
years.
13
Find a nuclear powerplant proper use
research
•
How can technology make nuclear energy safer
•First team to find it gets 4 points
•Second gets 2 points
•Third gets 1 point for the team(1point is 100 XP in
Classcraft)
