When Athens was starting to develop into a democracy, a man named Solon was called upon to develop laws to help stop social unrest and improve society in Athens. One of the laws he created banned debt slavery, meaning that an Athenian citizen could no longer sell himself or his family members into temporary slavery to pay off a debt. This was the first time someone in Greek Society stood up against slavery. He also let more people participate in government than ever before- even if they were poor farmers.

Plato discusses this theory in his writing called 'The Republic'. He believed it was important to set up justice and harmony in society.
