Multiple Choice
What is the difference between the function of the glycoprotein structures of an HIV virion and the cilia of an animal cell?
The glycoprotein structures are used for attachment, and the cilia are used to move fluids around the cell
The glycoprotein structures are used to obtain nutrition, and the cilia are used to secrete proteins
The glycoprotein structures are used to provide physical support for the viral envelope, and the cilia strengthen the cell membrane
The glycoprotein structures are used for defense, and the cilia are sued for locomotion

Eukaryotic Cell
Prokaryotic Cell
Bacteriophage virus
Flu virus
34
Explanation Slide...
THe lysogenic cycle is a dormant cycle for the virus - it integrates its DNA into the cell but doesn't not activly take over.
35
Multiple Choice
When a virus takes over a cell, it can cause the cell to create many more copies of the virus until the cell bursts open and releases them. What part of the virus's lifecycle is this?

small pox
measles
polio
human papiloma virus
42
Explanation Slide...
Small pox was eradicated (world wide) in 1980!
43
Have you heard of the virus HIV?
HIV is a virus, viruses are non-living because they cannot reproduce on their own, they are much smaller than even bacteria.
HIV
Because HIV is a virus and cannot reproduce on its own, it needs a host cell to make copies of itself.
In humans HIV attacks white blood cells. Proteins on the outside of the HIV particle attach to proteins on white blood cells. This tricks the white blood cell into letting the virus in. Once inside, HIV takes over the cell and uses it as a machine to make more HIV particles.
What does HIV do to cells?
44
Multiple Choice
Which conclusion about HIV infection of a host cell is best supported by the diagram?
It takes place outside of living cells
It relies on the host cell to reproduce
It involves the process of meiosis
It requires carbon dioxide
