Photosynthesis is the process plants use to convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, and
water into food. This process is essential for plant growth and the production of
oxygen.
Photosynthesis takes place in plant cells that contain chlorophyll. Light energy is
absorbed by chlorophyll and used to convert carbon dioxide and water into
glucose and oxygen. Oxygen is released as a byproduct.
The chemical equation for photosynthesis is:
6CO2 + 6H2O + Light Energy → C6H12O6 + 6O2
Photosynthesis occurs mostly in the leaves of plants. The spongy mesophyll layer
contains chlorophyll and is where the reactions take place. The stomata on the
underside of leaves allow the exchange of gases needed for photosynthesis.
Photosynthesis provides the food and oxygen needed by nearly all life on Earth. It
is one of the most important biochemical processes and continues the cycle of
energy flow that sustains life.
