Mongol Empire
The Mongolian Empire and its
achievements.
2
Overview
This empire was the largest,
contiguous empire in history.
Founded by Genghis Khan, after
his father Temujin united several
nomadic tribes.
They were expert horsemen and archers
3
Beginnings
The Mongolian people before Genghis Khan were nomadic, meaning they
moved around from place to place.
●This meant that children were able to ride horses from an early age and
that they were well-taught how to hunt and move quickly via horses.
Genghis began adding to his influence and tribe through warfare, diplomacy,
and terror- join his army or die.
In 1206 Genghis Khan is recognized as the “Great Khan” by all of the tribal
leaders of the Mongols, making him the supreme leader.
4
Downfall
After Genghis Khan died his rule was divided
by his sons and then later by his grandsons.
This led to disputes and allowed rebels to oust
the Khanates.
The different Khanates did have disputes
amongst themselves, but they did all adopt
Islam as the official religion.
Because the Mongolian culture was so
nomadic, as was the military, it made it hard
for them to maintain their level of power
through these difficulties
5
Legacy
The Mongols made the first serious connection
between Europe and Africa with Asia. This allowed
trade to flourish
Gunpowder, paper, printing, and the compass all
became common place in Europe, where before they
were just in Asia.
They also helped open the way for the Black Death to
spread around the world.
