What does Manifest Destiny mean and why did the
philosophy become popular in the U.S. by the
1830s?
●Manifest Destiny was the right of the U.S to expand their
border to the Pacific Ocean
●Philosophy became popular because of the U.S increasing
industrialization
●Advances in transportation and communication
○Demanded more specialized knowledge
Why did the U.S. want to take Mexico’s northern
territory by the 1840s?
●During war U.S government attempted to acquire territorial
possessions in Mexico (Unsuccessful)
●After event, idea of additional territorial expansion was
popular with the U.S.
●Pro-slavery southerners wanted to expand south

How did President Polk use the Rio Grande/Nueces
River border dispute to justify war with Mexico?
