Improper Fractions
Sometimes you will end up with a fraction whose Numerator is bigger than the Denominator. When this happens it is called an Improper Fraction.
Numerator: The top part of a fraction, the number of pieces.
Denominator: The bottom part of the fraction, total number of pieces.

4
Sometimes when you divide there is a Remainder. That is fine! Just put the Remainder back over the Denominator.
with some Subtraction
Divide the Numerator by the Denominator. This will tell you how many Wholes were in the Improper Fraction.

Wholes with Partials
As we know the number 1 may be represented by any fraction where the Numerator = the Denominator. So whenever the Numerator is bigger than the Denominator we can rewrite those pieces as a Whole Number.
A Whole Number beside a fraction is a Mixed Number.
8
The fun thing is we can change them back to Improper Fractions if we wanted to.
Here are Examples:
9
Then add the Numerator to get the total number of parts. You then put the sum back over the Denominator and have an Improper Fraction again.
with some Addition
Multiple the Whole Number by the Denominator, this will the convert the Wholes back into parts.
