What is the organ system that carries out gas exchange?

5

Organs of the Respiratory System

  • Nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and their smaller branches, and the lungs

  • Majority of the respiratory system structures are just conducting passages that carry oxygen to the lungs

  • The alveoli are the structures responsible for conducting gas exchange with the blood

  • These conducting passages also purify, humidify, and warm air to prevent dust or bacteria reaching the lungs

6

The Nose

  • This is the only visible external structure of the respiratory system

  • Within the nose are olfactory sensors that are responsible for detecting smell

  • The mucus produced in the nose moistens the air and traps incoming foreign debris

  • The debris will begin to be broken down by enzymes in the mucus, and will eventually make its way to the throat and into the stomach to be dissolved by stomach acids

  • The palate is the separation between the oral and nasal cavities

What vocabulary word does laryngo- sound like?

8

The Pharynx

  • The pharynx is a muscular passageway and often referred to as the throat

  • The pharynx has three regions, the nasopharynx, the oropharynx, and the laryngopharynx

  • Food and air take the same pathway through the pharynx, but food will continue to the esophagus while air goes to the larynx

  • Located in the pharynx is the pharyngotympanic tubes are responsible for draining fluid from the middle ear and equalizing pressure

    • Babies are more susceptible to ear infections if mom does not feed baby slightly sitting up

    • Ear infections are more common after a sore throat

What is the role of the larynx?

1

To control swallowing

2

To route food and air into the proper channel

3

To divide the trachea to lead air to the lungs

4

To carry out gas exchange

13

The Larynx

  • The larynx or the voice box is responsible for routing food and air into the proper channels and plays a role in speech

  • At the top of the larynx is an elastic cartilage that protects the opening of the larynx

  • During regular breathing the epiglottis allows for passage of air, but when food is swallowed it covers and acts like a lid to the larynx and directs food towards the esophagus

media

14

The Larynx

  • If anything other than air enters the larynx this causes a coughing response to prevent the substance from entering the lungs

  • Because this reponse does not function while sleeping, refrain from giving sleeping people any fluids or solids

  • If you place your hand on your neck right under your chin, and swallow you can feel your epiglottis rise

  • Part of the membrane in the larynx folds to form the vocal folds

    • The vibrating of these folds or cords is what allows us to speak

What do you think would happen if a person were to throw up in their sleep?

16

The Main Bronchi

  • The right and left main bronchi are formed by the division of the trachea

  • The right main bronchus is wider, shorter, and straighter making this much more common for forign objects to become lodged

  • The smaller subdivisions of the main bronchi within the lungs are direct routes to the air sacs, or alveoli

17

What are you looking forward to in your future? How do you plan to accomplish that?

Week 12 Bell Work

18

Respiratory Zone

  • The bronchioles lead into the respiratory zone structures, the alveoli

  • The respiratory zone is the only site of actual gas exchange

  • The walls of the alveoli are thin epithelium, think thinner than paper

  • This allows for gas exchange through the walls of the alveoli with the blood stream

What is the trachea?

Where is the thoracic cavity?

23

The Lungs

  • The lungs are fairly large organs, and take up majority of the thoracic cavity

  • Each lung is divided into lobes by fissures. The right lung has three lobes and the left lung has two lobes

  • The lungs have walls that produce fluid, the pleura, this allows the lungs to glide easily while breathing

  • The pleura allows for sliding but retricts against separation, meaning the lungs are anchored to the thorax wall

media

24

Open Ended

What do you think occurs if the lungs do not have this fluid?

25

The Bronchial Tree

  • After entering the lungs, the main bronchi subdivide into smaller and smaller branches, finally ending at the smallest passageway the bronchioles

  • Because of this branching of the respiratory pathways within the lungs it is often referred to as the respiratory tree
