Getting started
Today, you will read Flygirl by Sherri L. Smith and track the development of the main idea. Be prepared to read, think critically, and write a lot! To prepare for this assignment, you will need:
- a laptop (of course)
- a keyword tracker (follow instructions on next page to create one on blank paper)
- a pencil/pen
*For some of us, this may be a re-read! You'll be okay (:
4
Let's start by creating a keyword/notes tracker on blank paper. Take a look at the one on the right hand side of the screen.
As you read today, remember to track at least 2 - 3 keywords per chunk that capture the big topic! Can't remember what a big topic is? That's okay, we're going to review!

On the next page, be prepared to answer the following question:
If the big topic is a "burger," THINK: what is the main idea?

What does the big topic tell us as a reader?
11
okay, we're almost ready to start reading!
Now that we have reviewed big topic vs. main idea, let's get started. In front of you, you should have your laptop, a pencil, and your keyword tracker.
As you read today, all your chunks will be right on the computer. The whole text will also be available as a slide at the end of the assignment that you can return to if needed.
For chunk #1, I will provide an example and then you will complete chunks #2 - #8 on your own or in small groups! Good luck (:
12
Instructions:
Begin by reading the title and the chunk. As you read, try to determine what is happening in this scene. In your keyword tracker, pick 2 - 3 keywords that best capture the big topic of this chunk.
Once you've completed this task, jump to the next page to see my example of the keywords and notes.
Chunk #1
Notice this important background information. From this, we learn the main character's name, Ida. We also learn where she is located, Louisiana, the time period, the 1940s, and a potential subject or big topic, being a pilot.

Chunk #1
Chunk # | Keywords | Notes |
|---|---|---|
1 | clean, money, music | Ida and Jolene are listening to music while cleaning a house to make some extra money. |
READ BELOW:
The "Notes" section should be used to summarize what is happening in the chunk. 1 complete sentence please!
The best way to complete the "Notes" section is by asking yourself -- "Okay, I have my keywords. I know the big topic. What is the author trying to tell me about this big topic?"
In this case, I asked myself, "What is the author trying to tell me about the connections between Ida, cleaning, money, and music?
