Getting started

Today, you will read Flygirl by Sherri L. Smith and track the development of the main idea. Be prepared to read, think critically, and write a lot! To prepare for this assignment, you will need:
- a laptop (of course)
- a keyword tracker (follow instructions on next page to create one on blank paper)
- a pencil/pen

*For some of us, this may be a re-read! You'll be okay (:

  1. Let's start by creating a keyword/notes tracker on blank paper. Take a look at the one on the right hand side of the screen.

Now that we have reviewed big topic vs. main idea, let's get started. In front of you, you should have your laptop, a pencil, and your keyword tracker.

As you read today, all your chunks will be right on the computer. The whole text will also be available as a slide at the end of the assignment that you can return to if needed.

For chunk #1, I will provide an example and then you will complete chunks #2 - #8 on your own or in small groups! Good luck (:

Instructions:

​Begin by reading the title and the chunk. As you read, try to determine what is happening in this scene. In your keyword tracker, pick 2 - 3 keywords that best capture the big topic of this chunk.
