Non fiction comprehension and SPAG - word sounds

​In this lesson we will briefly go through some important terms relating to word sounds, before we read through the comprehension together - identifying any tricky words or phrases!

​Onomatopeia

​A word which mimics the sound of the subject it describes

Examples
Splash
Crash
Bang

​What sound might these
leaves make?

​Sibilance

​This is closely related to onamatopeia
"A hissing sound is created in a group of words through the repetition of 's' sounds"

Can you think of any words which create this effect?

​Sibilance

​There are more than 500 species of sharks swimming in the world’s ocean. Yet when

most people think of these cartilaginous fish, a single image comes to mind: a large,

sharp-toothed and scary beast.


Can you spot the sibilance?

​Hyperbole

​exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.
